About SM Gays

SM Gays is a not-for-profit social and educational group for gay men interested in consensual, sexual sadomasochism.

Meeting since July 1981, its aim is to encourage safe and lawful SM practices through sharing of information among people with similar interests.

The group is unfunded and run by volunteers.

Every month the group holds a Discovery Night in Central London where you can learn more about SM techniques and meet other people with similar interests. There is no membership requirement or dress code and the atmosphere is friendly and informal.
At present these events attract around 200 gay men.

Main activities

  • Events held on the third Thursday of every month in Central London
  • Publication, on line, of Safer Sex booklet and other information sheets
  • Running courses to introduce people to safe sane consensual SM
  • Through the SM Gays Benevolent Fund, raising money for people with AIDS or facing legal persecution because of their SM sexuality
  • Providing speakers and supporting SM-related events

We cannot meet people outside the monthly meetings, nor do we offer a penpal or counselling service or enter into correspondence.

Update on Extreme Pornography Legislation

The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act became law in May 2008.

This law makes it illegal to possess pornographic images which show an act which threatens a person’s life, an act which results, or is likely to result, in serious injury to a person’s anus, breasts or genitals, an act which involves sexual interference with a human corpse, or a person performing an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal(whether dead or alive).

This section of the Act took effect on 26th January 2009.

The Spanner Trust has produced a guidance leaflet explaining what the law says and how to protect yourself. This is available from here.

Ministry of Justice has now issued its own guidance and a PDF version of this can be downloaded from here.

One of the defences available is that the images depict the consensual activities of the owner of the image. However as many SM activities are currently illegal it is now vitally important that we get as much support as possible to change the law on consent and injuries sustained during sex. For more information go to the Spanner Trust.

SM Gays has always been anti-fascist and anti-racist.
